Back to School!

Sep 3, 2014

crying back to school

Remember when you were a kid? Back to school often meant scratchy new clothes that hadn't been broken in, fresh school supplies (crayons with pointy ends!) and a new, even crazier, bus driver. It also meant the return to a schedule after a summer of freedom. But...this can be a positive thing! A schedule provides direction and the ability to be purposeful and to get things done. This year, the Know the Score blog will continue to search out tips and strategies to help you make the most of the academic year, because (here comes our tagline)...

Know the Score is about Knowing More!

So What Exactly is Know the Score 2?

@KnowtheScore2 is an interactive problem gambling awareness program that dispels myths about gambling, highlights signs of problem gambling, shares local problem gambling services and suggests ways to keep gambling safer. Since we first decided to jump in a van in 2002, Know the Score 2 has been driving coast to coast, setting up displays and chatting up college and university students in British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and New York State. We have logged countless travel hours, drank litres of coffee and interacted with more than 340,000 students. But then someone in the office said: “Um. Technology.” So we've broadened the conversation by expanding our online communications, reaching students we aren't visiting in person.

That said, in 2014/15, we are visiting more than 20 campuses with our kts2 interactive display, with two different contests depending on where you go to school! Check our tour schedule to see if we're on your campus this year, and if so, drop by to see us and find out how you can win a free iPad! If you’re not one of the campuses with a #kts2 display, don’t worry: you can test your problem gambling prevention knowledge online and become eligible for a $1,500 scholarship award. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook to get tips about student success, information about problem gambling prevention and some updates from the road.

So...knowing more about what?

This blog is all about knowing more and sharing information to help you have the best experience on campus. We obviously want to provide information about gambling risks (and say hi from the road!)—but we're also seeking out and reporting tips from students and colleges and universities from across Ontario, covering topics like: time management, money management, studying strategies and balance.

So as you get back on schedule, setting your alarm and forcing yourself to wake up to hit that early morning class, we hope this blog will motivate (and maybe entertain) you, starting from your first week of school right up to the holiday break (did you know that’s only 13 weeks away?) Will we always seamlessly tie-in a gambling risk theme? Don't bet on it! Will we sometimes employ cringe-worthy gambling clichés? Absolutely!

We’d love to hear from you – so please let us know what topics you are interested in: What you like, what you don't like, what you'd like more of. Use our contact page or get in touch by Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks for checking in. Have a great first semester!
